Norwich Puppet Theatre is housed in a Grade 1 listed Medieval building in the centre of Norwich, the church of Saint James, which still includes many original features but is also now home to a large family of puppets. It is one of only a handful of theatres in England that is dedicated to creating, presenting and supporting innovation in puppetry and related art forms. Throughout the year, NPT programmes leading international puppetry companies for Early Years audiences, families and adults.
We also create and tour our own productions; recent shows include The Tinderbox, Pied Piper and Red Riding Hood. We hold regular workshops for all age groups and provide professional development opportunities with masterclasses led by leading figures within the industry.
As one of the only professional venue-based producing theatres in Norwich, we offer a uniquely diverse and high quality range of learning experiences.
We can deliver a wide variety of hands-on experiences in the classroom, at other venues or in the Theatre including Puppet Making, Shadow Play, Show & Tells with our fascinating puppet collection, and back-stage or heritage tours. We can also provide drop-in workshops for large events, festivals and community projects.
The venue has level access throughout and we can accommodate wheelchairs in both the Main Theatre and Octagon Studio.
Please note that we are a converted Medieval Church so there is some uneveness in the floor surfaces and one doorway is too narrow to accommodate a wheelchair, but alternative routes are available.
If your group includes a wheelchair it is advisable to book by phone - 01603 629921 rather than booking online.
The Main Theatre has a hearing induction loop installed.
There are two accessible toilets - one off the main foyer and the other near the Octagon Studio and one of these toilets has Baby Changing Facilities
Minimum age recommendation
All activities - performances and workshops - at the Puppet Theatre have age recommendations.
Unless otherwise stated the minimum age for a child to attend a performance is 3 years, this is both for the benefit of the children and other audience members.
