Marriotts Way
This wonderful cycle and walking path runs from Aylsham to Hellesdon along the trackbeds of two former railway lines. The route passes Cawston, Reepham,Lenwade, Taverham and Drayton taking you through the Wensum Valley with regular views of the River Wensum to enjoy.
Named after William Marriott, once Chief Engineer and Manager of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway. There are some on-road sections through Norwich, but otherwise the route is traffic-free and flat.
This route follows a course of two lines from Norwich City to Melton Constable and the other the Great Eastern line from Wroxham to County School.
Beginning close to the River Wensum, the route continues through farmland, woodland and water meadows. Look out for the local flora and fauna - the closure of the railway was good news for the trackside vegetation and the wildlife that now inhabits it. You may see jays, magpies, green woodpeckers and wrens. There's also a wide range of plant life, including primroses and wild strawberries, and a variety of insects, particularly butterflies and moths. There is a wealth of public art along the route with rail sculptures every mile which can be used to mark your progress, or as seats for a well earned rest. There are benches and bridges inscribed with poetry and thoughtful words and concrete sculptures that represent the railway heritage.
Conveniently, Reepham station is home to cycle hire (in the summer) as well as excellent tearooms and gift shops for visitors. Foxley Wood is open all year round and with free access. If you want to add a bit of an edge to your Marriott’s Way cycling you can always call into the BMX track at Slough Bottom Park in Norwich.
